The first quarter of 2009 is already gone but it’s been a busy start for the gaming world. From the release of Halo Wars and Resident Evil 5 to some great, obscure titles that are rapidly becoming cult favorites, 2009 has been a great year for video games so far with a lot more yet to come. In order to keep track of the new titles, we will be naming our picks for BestBuyGames top Five Video Games of the Quarter. We will name new picks for each quarter and at the end of the year these 20 games will be our finalist for BestBuyGames Video Game of the Year. Any game released past the half way point of the last month of the current quarter will be eligible for inclusion in the next quarter. So in no particular order our picks for BestBuyGames Top Five Video Games of the First Quarter, 2009, are:
Major League Baseball 2K9
Get ready to get down and dirty with the newest addition to the MLB game franchise. Lifelike player movements and graphics showcase a truly remarkable game. Several bugs hinder this game’s ratings but they shouldn’t be noticed by casual players.
Tom Clancy’s EndWar
Utilizing a new gaming concept by allowing the user to play by voice commands has made it possible for even the most game-challenged to enjoy modern video games. While simple commands with the controller are still necessary, very little skill with the controller is needed.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
Focusing on family friendly fun instead of gratuitious violence, this game is a refreshing alternative to the blood and guts genre. Sort of reminds me of Sonic on valium, this is a game the whole family can enjoy.
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
Superbly scary with masterful effects this is one game that you won’t soon forget. Great storyline makes this game one of the best games released this quarter.
Resident Evil 5
Despite the controversy over CapCom releasing RE5 before it was complete and then charging for the addons, this is truly a remarkable game. Excellent graphics and playability highlight this latest addition and assure it of becoming the premier game of the franchise.

There were lots of great games released in the first quarter of 2009. Unfortunately some good titles had to be left off. Personally I didn’t like halo wars but a reviewer has to be able to put his personal feelings aside and give a non-biased critique. Judging by the number of emails I received about halo wars, I will add it to this list as an honorable mention. But I’ll stand by my decision on skate 2. Fun game but not on my list of the 5 best for this quarter.
