Top Games of the 3rd Quarter 2009
Perhaps wanting to finish the year with strong releases in the last quarter that will capture critics’ and fans’ attention, alike, to compete for game of the year, the third quarter was a bit weak in the number of new releases. But that doesn’t mean the games, themselves, were weak. As a matter of fact there were some very strong titles this quarter, some of which I might have passed over had there been more of a selection from which to choose. So as we start the final three months of 2009, Bestbuygames.net looks back at games released during the previous 3 month period to pick our top games of the third quarter of 2009. As always, any game released during the final 2 weeks of a quarter is eligible for inclusion for the following quarter. So in no particular order our picks for this quarter’s top games are:
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Rarely does an exclusive on a handheld make our list. Especially one designed for the DS. Not that there’s anything wrong with the DS, but let’s admit it, most DS games are designed for, well, non-serious gamers. These are games your parents go crazy over, and Diabolical Box is no different. Except that it’s appeal has included gamers of all ages. This game will occupy you for hours on end and will work your brain in ways traditional games can’t. But don’t let that stop you because this is one great game.

Fight Night Round 4
A must have for all fans of fighting games, Fight Night Round 4 builds upon the successes of previous titles in the franchise to produce a truly superior game. You can finally answer the question of who is the all-time best practitioner of the sweet science. From Iron Mike Tyson to Muhammed Ali, choose your fighter and battle for bragging rights. Excellent playability and game controls contribute to its popularity and assure that this title will be a frontrunner for fighting game of the year.

Madden NFL 10
What list of top games would be complete without a Madden title included? Consistently one of the top performers in sales and gamer satisfaction, the Madden franchise takes sports gaming to whole new level. Combining the realism of a simulation with customization options of an RPG, Madden goes where other sports titles only dream. Updated rosters and stats, more lifelike movements, and better functionality with replays and cutscenes highlight he best game in the franchise to date. Now if they could just find a way to keep their cover boys from getting injured!

Batman: Arkham Asylum
We’ve all been through this before. A new batman title is released, we rush out to buy it, and after just a few minutes we realize what a piece of junk the game is. But this isn’t your typical dark knight title. Hailed as the best superhero video game ever made, Batman: Arkham Asylum does not disappoint. Utilizing a fight engine that allows you string together martial arts combos or move in the shadows for a stealth kill, it doesn’t take long to realize that this is a very, very good game, maybe one of the best of the year. In any case, it’s nice to finally get a Batman game that isn’t an embarrassment to own.

Halo 3: ODST
Welcome to the world of Halo, the game that put xbox on the map. The Halo franchise is one of the most successful of all time. Now, to add to the demand, Microsoft and Bungie bring us this stand-alone expansion pack, meaning you don’t have to own the base game to play. New maps, new missions, and playing as a new recruit to the orbital drop shock trooper team, you must earn your chops to truly consider yourself one of the elite, an ODST member worthy of Master Chief’s praise.
